On July 13th, I took two young girls (going into second grade next school year) hiking at one of my favorite nearby preserves in Rhode Island: the Turner Reservoir Loop Trail and Bridgham Farm Conservation Area. We examined maps and navigation, practiced observation, used binoculars, avoided tics and poison ivy, discussed outdoor safety, and learned about the workings of a camera for nature photography, but mostly, we explored their curiosities and embraced their inquisitive, playful spirits!
Being in a role where I can inspire youth to appreciate and conserve nature is truly significant, as the next generation depends more than ever on its understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Seeing the joy and freedom that the girls felt throughout the hike was especially heartwarming.
